Men are not very oversexed in the media it is almost always women who’s bodies, especially their breasts, to entice the reader/audience in whatever publication the ad is in. There would never be a picture of a man’s genitals used in an ad, saying that there was “nothing fake about it”. I choose the oppositional reading of showing just how in today’s society, women and their bodies are oversexed and used as enticing lures for people to buy products and goods. Why did you choose the oppositional reading? It is implying that the chips are “real”, and “natural”, and not “fake”, insinuating that they are mocking breast enhancement. They are using a woman’s (in this case, Perry’s) to attract and entice those who read this advertisement and also potential customers who will buy the chips. They use double meanings–while they are talking about the chips and how they are all natural, they are implying the same thing about Perry’s breasts. Above, the headline reads “nothing fake about ’em”, insinuating and subliminally hinting that the company is referring to Perry’s breasts, and not the product. In this advertisement, Perry is holding up two bags of PopChips up to her chest. I chose this ad of singer Katy Perry endorsing PopChips because it was a well-known ad and has been the subject of a bit of controversy.
